SAM XL
Sam XL (one half of the Professionals) can often be spotted wading through crowds of tiny-looking dancers between the floor and the booming Pure Filth sound system. Having been part of the scene for over 2 decades, Sam is no stranger to anyone in the bass scene. On top of DJ'ing and throwing events, he's owned two record stores including the infamous BEATNONSTOP, where he then co-founded the Temple of Boom. Though Sam's well known in LA for his BASSFACE parties, Sam is a DJ at heart and will be bringing the fire with sick dubs guaranteed to knock your socks of
MACHETE
MACHETE is a staple in the Los Angeles Jungle/Drum and Bass scene.
He began his musical career spinning as DJ Rob G.(not the hardcore DJ) back in 1992,
playing hip-hop at infamous after hours spots like No-Doz, What?, and Caffiend.
The Los Angeles underground rave scene was in its infancy then and Rob was inspired by the burgeoning techno-breakbeat culture emerging out of England via local DJs:
RAW,CURIOUS, and OSCAR DA GROUCH.
These 'Jungle' beats that evolved from frantic old-school breaks layered with hip-hop/reggae vocal-snippets intrigued Rob and pulled him in a new direction.
Around '93-'94, he helped form JUNGLIST PLATOON with his close circle of friends. These die-hard 'Junglists' could be seen at just about every underground event, giving out stickers and wearing t-shirts bearing their name. Rob G., urged by his peers, decided to change his DJ name to MACHETE due to the nature of his mixing and cuttin skills. "What better way to cut thru our urban jungle soundscapes than with a Machete?" He then began putting JUNGLIST PLATOON on the map by getting booked at nearly every Jungle event in the Greater Los Angeles area.
MACHETE has also flexed skills in Hawaii, Vancouver, and cities across the continental US including New York, Miami, Texas, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco and many more. He made history as one of the first Jungle/DnB DJs flown to perform in Anchorage-Alaska, alongside San Francisco's SAGE, and has been fortunate to play on the same bill with heavyweights such as DIESELBOY, ANDY C, DJ HYPE, LTJ BUKEM, and RONI SIZE. MACHETE was also a featured artist on various dates of the now infamous KUNG FU KNOWLEDGE TOUR of 1999 w/ fellow scratch technician DJ CRAZE and the legendary ROB PLAYFORD.
In March of 1999, the JUNGLIST PLATOON started a weekly event called RESPECT
with MACHETE as head of talent bookings as well as resident DJ. In 2000, Rob helped organize a RESPECT event in Miami at the Winter Music Conference, which successfully placed the RESPECT name in the worlds eyes and ears. After 9 years, RESPECT is the longest running Jungle/DnB weekly in Los Angeles as well as being one of the most successful in the United States. RESPECT is globally known for bringing the best in international and stateside talent.
Circa 2000, Los Angeles saw the birth Cal-Tek Recordings, a label formed to push the sound of JUNGLIST PLATOON. The first release, CTR001, featured original tunes by MACHETE and DJ CLUTCH engineered by SENSE.
Now in 2010, MACHETE the DJ is busier than ever, occasionally opening for mainstream Hip-Hop acts at LA's House of Blues on the Sunset Strip.
Combined with DJ residencies at RESPECT, one-off events such as ENGAGE, his DnB websource www.machete-media.net
and production projects coming out of CAL-TEK studios prove his versatility as an artist.
MACHETE's longevity speaks for his talents and dedication, which has surely solidified his place in the world Drum and Bass scene.
CRS?
CRS?/Dj Curious Born and raised in Los Angeles CRS? has been in the music world all his life. His father before him being a recording engineer at one of L.A.’s top studio of the times “The Sound Factory” in Hollywood he was practically born in the studio. He started on drums at the age of 8 which so happened to be the same year he was first fascinated with the art of Dj’in. At age 13 he received his first pair of turntables and hasn’t put then down since. He has spun in almost every city in North America and has released records all over the world. Including numerous tracks on his own “Herbn’ Music” as well as fellow label mate APX1’s Ghetto Life label. Also being signed to Top Cat's 9 Lives label based out the UK. He produced the hit single "Jah vibes" for Tenor Fly he shows his skills as a producer as well as a dj. CRS? has released over 500 mix-tapes since getting into the drum and bass scene over 18 years ago. His current projects include producing and engineering hip-hop artist Big Bam the Boss an official DPG member and has performed in L.A., Dallas, Seattle, Chicago, New York, Washington D.C., Portland, Miami, Las Vegas, Toronto, and Hawaii and have opened up for such artists as goldie, DJ Hype, Roni size, Kenny Ken, Grooverider, Fabio, LTJ Bukem, Dj Zinc, Taxman, Brian Gee, J.J. Frost, Total Science, John B., Mobb Deep, KRS-one, Lil’ John, Fat Joe, E-40, Too Short, Nelly, and Immortal Technique to name a few. Future projects include remixes of these hip-hop tracks as well as original drum and bass releases ranging from R&B styles to reggae and reggaeton flavors. A true veteran to the west coast flavor, CRS? represents what’s really going on in the streets of Los Angeles. “Our Ghetto". Now spreading the love for our culutre through series of monthly day parties called "I Love L.A." CRS? & Apx1 now give the oopurtunity to bring the L.A. scene together and express our different styles music all under one roof in just under 12 hours. The drum n bass scene in Los Angeles would be drastically different if not for the influence of the one like DJ CRS?. He has established himself as one of the godfathers of drum n bass here in the City of Angels. From rocking ol’ skool warehouse events back in the mid and late 90’s to rinsing clubs and massive from 2000 till today, CRS? is a name that frequents the lips of many established DJs within the Los Angeles circuit as an influence. His legacy doesn’t stop short with showcases behind the decks, but also include his production credits. He has roughly 30+ releases and hundreds of tunes he has passed out and played as “exclusives”. From the sounds of the dub/reggae influenced ragga jungle to aggressive amen sets even down to upfront drum n bass, CRS? is a rare DJ who has buck’d being pigeonholed and can play any style you want. He is lethal on the decks with the mix, has the ability to implore a jungle scratching technique perfected by few and most important is a favorite of dancefloors across the country. Recently (along with label mate APX-1) he ventured to South Africa to embark on a tour which literally “shut shit down”!!! Don’t sleep on this LA don.
FRENETIC
Ever since 1999, Frenetic has been through many different musical phases in his DJ career. His passion began with the Golden Era of hip-hop and the rise of turntablism. During the earlier years, his experience consists of backyard parties and local battles. From there, his turntablism skills were fine tuned and noticed. He also displayed his array of turntable antics recording songs and performing live shows with various hip-hop groups and MC’s. Through out the years, he has experimented and grasped various genres from classic rock to different electronic styles. Now with a strong musical background and the found love for the bass heavy scene, Frenetic joined the BWOMP! crew and combined eclectic forces.
